Azure Data Share
Secure, governed data sharing with external organisations on Azure
Overview
Azure Data Share provides a simple, safe, and managed service for sharing large datasets with partners, customers, and external organisations — without writing code, managing infrastructure, or sharing credentials. Supporting both snapshot-based sharing (periodic copies) and in-place sharing (for Azure Data Explorer), it integrates natively with Azure Storage, Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Azure Data Explorer. This focused one-day training walks through setting up shares, managing recipients, configuring refresh schedules, and governing who can access what.
What you'll learn
- Understand the difference between snapshot sharing and in-place sharing in Azure Data Share
- Create and configure a Data Share account and send invitations to external recipient organisations
- Share datasets from Azure Blob Storage, ADLS Gen2, Azure SQL Database, and Azure Synapse
- Accept a data share invitation as a consumer and map datasets to a target storage account
- Configure snapshot schedules for recurring automated data delivery to recipients
- Monitor share activity, revoke recipient access, and manage share subscriptions
Programme
Day 1 — Setting up, sharing & receiving data
- Azure Data Share overview: snapshot vs in-place sharing and supported data stores
- Data provider workflow: creating a Data Share account, adding datasets, and inviting recipients
- Sharing from Azure Blob Storage and ADLS Gen2: containers, folders, and individual files
- Sharing from Azure SQL Database and Azure Synapse: tables and views
- Data consumer workflow: accepting an invitation and mapping datasets to target storage
- Snapshot schedules: hourly, daily, and on-demand refresh options
- Monitoring shares: tracking snapshot history, job status, and activity logs
- Security and governance: managed identities, revoking subscriptions, and compliance considerations
- Hands-on: set up a complete provider-to-consumer data share with a daily snapshot schedule
Who is this for?
- Data engineers and analysts who share data regularly with external partners or suppliers
- Organisations replacing manual, file-based data exchange with governed, automated pipelines
- Teams involved in data monetisation or open data publishing programmes
- Cloud architects designing partner data integration architectures on Azure
Prerequisites
- Basic Azure familiarity (portal, storage accounts, subscriptions)
- No coding experience required
