Microsoft Purview
Unified data governance, security, and compliance across your data estate
Overview
Microsoft Purview is a comprehensive data governance and compliance platform that spans your entire data estate — from on-premises databases to Azure services, Microsoft 365, and multi-cloud sources. This training covers the full data governance journey: scanning and classifying data assets, building a searchable Unified Catalog, tracking end-to-end lineage, enforcing data access policies, and implementing Data Loss Prevention and Information Protection. Ideal for data stewards, compliance officers, and data platform teams who need demonstrable control over their data landscape.
What you'll learn
- Set up and configure a Microsoft Purview account and connect it to your data sources
- Scan and classify data assets across Azure, on-premises SQL, and multi-cloud storage
- Build and maintain a searchable Unified Catalog with business glossary terms and data ownership
- Track end-to-end data lineage from source systems through transformation to BI reports
- Implement data access policies and attribute-based access control for ADLS Gen2 and Fabric
- Configure Data Loss Prevention and Information Protection sensitivity labels to protect sensitive data
Programme
Day 1 — Data Map, scanning & Unified Catalog
- Microsoft Purview portfolio overview: data governance, security, and compliance pillars
- Deploying a Purview account and configuring the Data Map with collections
- Creating and running data source scans: Azure SQL, ADLS Gen2, Synapse, and Microsoft Fabric
- Automated classification: built-in classifiers, custom classification rules, and sensitivity labels
- Unified Catalog: searching assets, assigning ownership, and managing collections and glossaries
- Hands-on: scan a full data estate, automatically classify sensitive fields, and build a governed catalog
Day 2 — Lineage, policies & compliance
- Data lineage: visualising how data flows from ingestion through transformation to reporting
- Business glossary: defining, approving, and linking business terms to technical data assets
- Data access policies: attribute-based access control for ADLS Gen2 and Microsoft Fabric
- Information Protection: sensitivity labels, encryption, and consistent labelling across M365 and Azure
- Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies: detecting and preventing sensitive data exfiltration
- Hands-on: configure end-to-end lineage tracking and apply a DLP policy for financial data
Who is this for?
- Data stewards and data governance teams building and managing a data catalog
- Compliance officers implementing data protection policies across the Azure estate
- Data platform architects integrating governance into Fabric, Synapse, or ADLS Gen2
- IT and security teams extending Microsoft 365 DLP and sensitivity labelling to data services
Prerequisites
- Familiarity with Azure concepts (subscriptions, resource groups, storage accounts)
- Basic understanding of data governance concepts (metadata, classification, lineage)
- Microsoft 365 familiarity is helpful for compliance modules but not required
